Welcome to the Chicago Inspector General's website. We are an independent office dedicated to ensuring honesty and integrity in City government by rooting out corruption, fraud, other misconduct, and waste.

ORGANIZATION OF THE OFFICE

Under the Inspector General, the IG's Office has been organized into four sections:

The Investigations Section:

The Investigations Section is the core of the Office. The Section is overseen by the Director of Investigations and Audits and is staffed with more than 45 investigators. Among our investigators are former FBI Special Agents and former Chicago Police Officers with significant experience in public corruption investigations.

The Investigations Section is comprised of four investigative teams. One of these teams focuses solely on fraud and corruption relating to contracts, while our other three teams focus on cases relating to specific departments in City government.

The Audit Section

The Audit Section was created in 2007 and is overseen by the Director of Investigations and Audits. The Audit Section is currently staffed with seven individuals, consisting of the Chief Auditor, Assistant Chief Investigator, and five Auditors. The members of the section are comprised of experienced auditors from both the public and private sectors.

The Audit Section conducts independent and professional audits, reviews, and evaluations of the operations of City departments, programs, functions, and those doing business with the City. These engagements focus on the integrity, accountability, economy, efficiency and effectiveness of each audit subject.

The Legal Section

The Legal Section was newly created as part of Inspector General Hoffman's reorganization of the Office in late 2005. The attorneys in the Legal Section are frequently paired with investigators to participate in more complex investigations and to help ensure that the investigations produce legally sound results. In disciplinary cases, the Legal Section will draft summary reports that provide the basis of the Inspector General's recommendations. In criminal cases, the attorneys will work closely with the assigned federal or state prosecutors and will help draft legal documents.

The Legal Section is comprised of two Deputy Inspectors General and three Assistant Inspectors General.

The Operations Section

The Operations Section was also created during the late 2005 reorganization. The Section is supervised by the Chief Administrative Officer and is comprised of administrative assistants, staff assistants, investigative analysts, an investigative assistant, Principal programmer Analyst, and Fiscal Administrator. Through the efforts of the operations staff, the areas of personnel, finance, procurement, investigative research, and information systems are supported to enable the Inspector General's Office to operate efficiently.
